Celebrated designer Erica Moore is changing the fashion game in Africa. A Nigerian based contemporary multi-disciplinary brand which has shaken up the fashion scene.
The brand has grabbed international media attention and has been worn by the likes of DJ Duffy (Basketball Wives LA), Pearl Thusi (Actress) ,Ini Edo (Actress), DJ Cuppy and many more big names.
What are your sources of inspiration?
I draw inspiration from God, nature and some of my style stars, the world has gone crazy with fashion and it’s not so difficult this days with the internet making fashion ideas so accessible.
How did you first get interested in fashion?
My mother owned a fabric store and a boutique, she was a fashion lover so I have been interested in fashion all my life, it’s family business.
What is the philosophy behind your work?
The philosophy behind my work is to create pieces that give my clients a lot of confidence, to blend glamour into everyday fashion appearance, for my pieces to create an undeniable presence anywhere they are displayed.
Do u remember the first piece of haute coute you’ve made/drawn what inspired it?
My first haute couture piece was inspired by nature, I wanted dramatic but classy statement. I had a huge handmade rose placed on a clingy off shoulder dress in a nude colour. It was a hit.
What sets apart Africa’s fashion scene from the main stages such as Milan, Paris, New York?
African fashion is full of colour and mystery, it recalls history in a playful and creative way. African fashion has an undeniable magical presence that cannot be resisted.
You have dressed many big names – your favourites?
My favourites are definitely Ini Edo, Pearl Thusi, Dj Duffy, DJ Cuppy, Dabota Lawson, Tonto Dike, Toke Makinwa, Zynnell Zuh, Ceec, Bonang Matheba, Sarkodie, Nyanda of Brick and Lace, Omotola Jalade and Beverly Osu.
Does the fashion tradition of your country influence your designs?
I infuse my traditional fashion into my pieces in a very stylish way
Africa, as a continent, is getting a lot of attention right now when it comes to fashion. What do you think Nigerian designers bring aesthetically when it comes to fashion in Africa?
I believe Nigerian designers have taken the fashion bar way higher than ever before, its totally so exciting to see our ideas compete effectively in the worlwide market, our fashion is unique because we infuse our cultural designs into the fashion trend which gives outstanding results
Your schedule is hectic, what do you do for self-care?
Over the years I’ve set up my business in such a way that I can get a lot help with work by designating duties accordingly, so it gives me a little time to relax and unwind with family and friends if I have to and I take occasional weekends off to lounge and meditate.
What advice would you give to young fashion and design students?
My advice will be to search your inner self and express fashion from your mind,do not look at the competition out there,have a laser sharp focus on your visions,learn from watching the best in the game closely and PRAY A LOT! *smiles*
How do you see your brand evolving from here?
I see my brand evolving so well, that its going to be on every important fashion street in the world and it will be a household fashion brand that solves major fashion problems and world economy problems.
